Postmuseum

National stamp museum in central Vaduz

The Postmuseum on Städtle is small and absorbing. Two compact floors trace Liechtenstein's astonishing 20th-century career as a stamp issuer — from the first 1912 set printed in Austria, through the spectacular full-colour issues of the 1950s and 60s, to the modern themed series.

It is genuinely better than you expect a stamp museum to be. The displays explain how the principality used stamps as a deliberate revenue strategy, and the rare 1930s airmail issues and early imperforate proofs are objects of beauty in themselves. Free admission and easy to combine with the Kunstmuseum next door.

A story
Liechtenstein issued its first stamps in 1912 and quickly realised that collectors all over the world would pay good money for them — at one point in the 1950s, philatelic sales accounted for around 10% of the country's national income. The principality is still one of the great philatelic powers, the Vatican of stamps.
