Ninth Fort

WWII mass execution site where tens of thousands were killed by Nazis

Originally part of Kaunas's ring of 19th-century defensive fortifications, the Ninth Fort earned the grim name "Fort of Death" during WWII when the Nazis used it as an execution site. Tens of thousands of people — most of them Jewish — were killed here. The museum documents these crimes with sobering exhibits and archival material. A monumental concrete sculpture marks the site.
