When to Go

Summer (June to August) is the best time to visit Kaunas. Temperatures sit comfortably between 15 and 25 degrees Celsius, the days are long, and the city's outdoor life is in full swing. Spring (April to May) is pleasant if unpredictable — the city greens up fast and there are fewer visitors.

Autumn brings rain and dropping temperatures, though September can still be mild. Winters are cold, dark, and snowy, with temperatures regularly dropping below minus ten. If you do visit in winter, the heated pubs and cafes along Laisves aleja are your refuge, and ice fishing on the reservoir is a genuine local experience.

The biggest event in the calendar is the Pazaislis Music Festival, running from June through August at the Pazaislis Monastery on the reservoir — three months of classical and jazz performances in a stunning Baroque setting. Kaunas City Day falls on 20 May, marking the city's medieval charter with street fairs, parades and live music across the Old Town. The Aura International Modern Dance Festival brings contemporary dance to the city and has been running since 1988.
