The main shopping strip is Laisves aleja, a 1.6 km pedestrianised avenue lined with shops, fountains and benches. This is the place for clothes and fashion. For something more distinctive, head to the Old Town where street vendors sell amber jewellery and handmade linen goods at fair, fixed prices. The Egles Galerija near the Town Hall is a small gallery selling affordable original paintings. For books, Knygynas Humanitas in the University basement near the War Museum stocks everything from Lithuanian literature to philosophy.
