This military museum, named after medieval Lithuania's greatest ruler, traces the country's military history with particular emphasis on the wars of independence fought between 1918 and 1923, when Lithuania defended its newly declared sovereignty against Bolshevik, Bermondtian, and Polish forces. The collection includes weapons, uniforms, military vehicles, and archival material.
The museum shares Independence Square with the MK Ciurlionis National Art Museum and the Freedom Monument, forming the cultural heart of Kaunas's New Town. The aviation wing is of particular interest — it documents the early Lithuanian air force, including the 1933 transatlantic flight of Darius and Girenas, two Lithuanian-American aviators who flew from New York to Kaunas before their plane crashed in Germany, just 650 km short of the finish.
