Telšiai is the unofficial capital of Samogitia, the stubborn western Lithuanian region with its own dialect, flag, and bear symbol. The town sits on low hills above Lake Mastis, and its centre is compact enough to see on foot without turning the day into a route march.
The best reason to come is the sense of regional identity. Start with the Samogitian Museum Alka, then walk through the old town to Telšiai Cathedral and the former seminary. Small bear sculptures appear on corners, benches, clocks, and railings, a local game that makes the town feel less formal than many Lithuanian county centres.
The lakefront gives Telšiai its softer edge. Lake Mastis Promenade is the place for an evening walk, and the Samogitian Village Museum on the southern shore adds farm buildings and rural context to the story told in the main museum. Telšiai is not a major destination, but if you are crossing northern Lithuania it rewards a spare day better than another roadside stop.
