Tytuvėnai

Small Samogitian town centred on a Baroque monastery and lake-dotted regional park.

Tytuvėnai is a small town in Samogitia whose scale hides a surprisingly strong travel reason. The centre is the church and Bernardine monastery ensemble, one of Lithuania's finest provincial Baroque religious complexes, with a courtyard made for slow wandering.

The monastery would be thin on its own, but Tytuvėnai also sits inside a regional park of lakes, forest, wetlands, and low glacial hills. Walk to Bridvaišis Lake in warm weather, or climb the observation tower for a quick read of the landscape.

This is not a place to rush across Lithuania for. It is, however, a good spare-day stop from Šiauliai or Kaunas if you want a quiet mix of sacred architecture and countryside.
