Matejče Monastery stands west of Kumanovo in the Skopska Crna Gora mountains. Serbian King Stefan Dušan began rebuilding it in the 14th century, and the church, dedicated to the Ascension of the Virgin Mary, keeps the Byzantine form of one large dome surrounded by four smaller ones.
The monastery has had a rough modern history, including damage during the 2001 conflict. That makes it less polished than North Macedonia's famous monastery stops, but also more revealing.
