Kumanovo

Northern Macedonian crossroads city with Ottoman, Orthodox, and Yugoslav memorial layers

Kumanovo is North Macedonia's northern crossroads, close to Skopje and the Serbian border. It is not a graceful city, and many travellers only know it from the highway, but it has enough local texture for a spare day: a lively square, old churches, an Ottoman mosque, a hilltop memorial, and monasteries in the surrounding villages.

The town's mix is part of the point. Macedonian, Albanian, Roma, Serbian, Turkish, and other communities all shape Kumanovo's streets and food. The old religious buildings are not showpieces on the scale of Ohrid, but they tell a northern Balkan story of overlapping empires and communities.

Come with modest expectations. Kumanovo is best for travellers already in Skopje or eastern North Macedonia who want a less polished city and a few serious anchors beyond the capital.
