New Yugoslavia Square is Kumanovo's centre of gravity. The square is framed by civic buildings, including the early-20th-century Craftsmen's Hall, and carries several layers of local memory: anti-fascist monuments, a Tito monument, and the statue of Batko Gjorgjija, the town's comic folk character.
It is the right place to begin, partly because it shows Kumanovo as it is: civic, mixed, a little ungainly, and very local.
