Ramla Bay

Address Ramla l-Hamra, Xagħra, Gozo

Ramla l-Hamra — "the red sand" — is the largest and most striking beach on Gozo, a wide arc of unusually red sand set between low cliffs and terraced fields. The colour comes from iron oxide in the local rock, and even when the rest of the island is crowded, the beach feels open because of its sheer scale. The water is shallow for a long way out, warm in summer, and turquoise in good light.

A few small kiosks sell drinks, snacks, and grilled fish; rent an umbrella or stake out a spot on the open sand. Above the eastern end of the beach, Calypso's Cave gives the best view down onto the bay. Avoid weekends in July and August if you want quiet — Maltese day-trippers come over from the main island for the beach.
