The megalithic temples of Ggantija near the village of Xaghra are among the oldest freestanding structures on earth, built around 3600 BC — a thousand years before the first Egyptian pyramid and two thousand years before Stonehenge. The gigantic limestone blocks in the outer walls reach six metres in height, and how people of the Neolithic period moved them with primitive tools remains a mystery. Local legend attributes the work to a giantess named Sunsuna who carried the stones on her head. The site is a UNESCO World Heritage monument.
