Sliema is the main resort and shopping district on Malta's northeast coast, sitting on a promontory between Valletta and St Julian's. It is where many visitors base themselves — close to the capital's historic sights, within walking distance of St Julian's nightlife, and well served by buses to the rest of the island.
The waterfront promenade (Triq ix-Xatt) runs for several kilometres along the coast, with views across Marsamxett Harbour to the golden bastions of Valletta. The town itself is mostly modern — apartment blocks and hotels replaced much of the older architecture — but the seafront walk is one of the best urban strolls in Malta, especially at sunset. Ferries to Valletta run frequently from the Sliema waterfront.
Shopping is concentrated along Tower Road and the Strand, with a mix of high-street brands and local shops. For swimming, the shoreline is mainly flat rock with ladders into the clear water — not sandy beaches, but the swimming is excellent.
