Soroca makes a reasonable base for exploring the north of Moldova, though distances are such that day trips to most other sites require an early start. The medieval cave monastery complex at Orheiul Vechi is a highlight of the whole country. Bălți, to the west, is Moldova's second city and a practical hub. Tiraspol, the capital of the breakaway Transnistria region, is a full day's journey south but offers one of the strangest travel experiences in Europe — a Soviet time capsule with its own currency and a completely different atmosphere.
