Orjen is the wall of rock you see from the seafront — a karst massif that goes from sea level to nearly 1,900 metres in a horizontal distance of about ten kilometres. It is one of the wettest places in Europe, which has carved the limestone into dramatic gorges, sinkholes and caves.
There are marked trails of varying difficulty. The shorter walks above Vrbanj village are doable in half a day; the climb to the highest peak, Zubački Kabao, is a proper full-day mountain hike and you should not attempt it without a map. In summer the lower slopes smell strongly of sage and immortelle.
