One of Amsterdam's oldest streets, following the line of the original sea dike. Now the centre of the city's Chinese community, with a run of Chinese restaurants and the Fo Guang Shan Buddhist temple at number 106 — a genuine working temple open to visitors. The street marks the edge of the red-light district without being part of it, which gives it a different character from the streets a block south.
