National Holocaust Monument

Opened in 2021 in the heart of Amsterdam's former Jewish quarter, this memorial consists of 102,163 bricks, each engraved with the name of a Dutch Jewish, Sinti, or Roma victim of the Holocaust. The bricks are arranged in the shape of Hebrew characters spelling "In Memoriam" — a pattern visible only from above.

The monument occupies a quiet site on the Weesperstraat, near the Hermitage and the Portuguese Synagogue. Walking through it, reading the names on the ground, is a sobering experience. The scale makes the abstract number concrete: more than a hundred thousand people, each one named. Free to visit at any time.
