The Augustijnenkerk is the old chapel of the Augustinian monastery whose cloister now houses the Hof van Nederland. The church was built in stages from the 13th century onwards and survived the Reformation as a Protestant parish church, which is what it remains today. From the Voorstraat it announces itself only as a tall brick gable; the entrance and the body of the church lie behind a row of houses, almost hidden.
Inside, the church is plain and tall, whitewashed and lit by clear windows in the Calvinist manner. Look for the simple stone memorial slabs in the floor — many of them mark the burials of 17th-century shipowners and lawyers. The church is open in the afternoons in summer and hosts occasional chamber music concerts; the acoustics are generous and intimate at the same time.
