Wantijpark

Large English-style city park on the Wantij river

Wantijpark is the city's biggest green space, laid out at the start of the 20th century along a former floodplain of the Wantij creek. It is unmistakably English in style — winding paths, open meadows, a serpentine pond, a few old oaks left from the original landscape — and is a 20-minute walk or a short bike ride north-east of the old town.

The park is popular with families: a small open-air theatre that hosts free concerts in summer, a paddling pond, a deer enclosure and a working rose garden. The Stadsboerderij (city farm) at the eastern edge has goats and chickens and is free to visit. It is the antidote to a morning of canals and gabled houses, and a pleasant place to picnic before heading on toward the Biesbosch.
