Drie Rivierenpunt

The corner where three big rivers meet, with constant ship traffic

Drie Rivierenpunt — Three Rivers Point — is the watery corner immediately outside the Groothoofdspoort, where the Merwede coming down from Germany, the Oude Maas heading west to Rotterdam and the Noord turning north toward the Lek all meet at the same spot. The result is constant ship traffic: long push-tow combinations from the Rhine, container barges, dredgers, the occasional tall sailing ship. There is no better place in the Netherlands to watch how inland shipping actually works.

A short walkway along the quay lets you look in three directions at once. Bring a coffee from the Groothoofd cafe, sit on the bollards, and watch the traffic for half an hour. In May the Dordt in Stoom festival brings dozens of steam ships and steam-powered machines to these quays for a weekend.

A story
Around 400 commercial vessels pass this point on a busy day, making it one of the most heavily trafficked river junctions in Europe. Local pilots have to coordinate ships by VHF radio with Rotterdam port traffic control.
