Heerde

Quiet Gelderland municipality between the IJssel River and Veluwe woods, suited to cycling and walking

Heerde is a small municipality in the province of Gelderland, tucked between the IJssel river and the forested hills of the Veluwe. The area is best known for its outdoor character — walking and cycling routes through the woods and heathlands that edge into the Veluwe national landscape. The town itself is modest, with a market square and a few local shops, but the surrounding countryside rewards those who explore it on foot or by bike.

For travellers, Heerde works mainly as a quiet base for exploring the Veluwe or for cycling along the IJssel river. The larger town of Zwolle lies about 25 kilometres to the north.

Getting There

Heerde has a train station on the Zwolle–Apeldoorn line, with direct connections to both cities. Zwolle is about 20 minutes north; Apeldoorn about 25 minutes south. From Zwolle there are fast trains to Amsterdam (about an hour) and other Dutch cities. By car, Heerde sits just off the N50, the main road connecting Zwolle and Apeldoorn along the IJssel.

Things to Do

Heerde's main attraction is its landscape — the meeting point of the IJssel floodplains and the Veluwe forests. Walking and cycling are the primary activities; the Veluwe is one of the largest nature reserves in the Netherlands, and several good routes begin within the municipality.
