Waalbrug

The Waalbrug is Nijmegen's main bridge across the Waal, opened in 1936 and still a working crossing carrying road and cycle traffic. It's a straightforward road bridge to look at, but the history embedded in it is extraordinary: this was the bridge that American paratroopers were ordered to capture intact during Operation Market Garden in September 1944, the objective that required crossing the river in open boats under fire while German defenders held the far bank.

The best view of the bridge is from the Waalkade, the riverside promenade directly below Valkhof hill, where you can stand roughly at the point from which the assault crossing launched. A small memorial near the north bank commemorates the men who crossed. The bridge is also simply a good place to walk across for the views of the wide river and the city skyline — the Waal here is one of the broadest stretches of the Rhine delta.

A story
On 20 September 1944, soldiers of the 82nd Airborne Division paddled across the wide Waal in flimsy canvas boats under direct German fire to outflank defenders on the bridge's north end. More than half the boats were sunk or disabled, but enough men made it across to take the northern tower. The bridge was captured intact that afternoon — one of the most celebrated acts of the Market Garden operation, and the most costly.
