A handsome 14th-century tower at the main crossroads of Zutphen's old centre, originally part of the town's medieval fortifications. The name means "dry apple tower" — possibly a reference to the dried goods once traded nearby, though nobody is entirely sure. The tower marks the point where the main streets converge and is the natural starting point for a walk through the old town.
The tower is occasionally open to visitors during events and heritage days. At street level it now houses a small shop. The surrounding square and the streets radiating from it — Beukerstraat, Turfstraat, Houtmarkt — are the heart of medieval Zutphen and the best area for a wander.
