By train Zutphen has a direct rail service from Amsterdam (change at Apeldoorn or direct via Deventer, about 90 minutes), Utrecht (about 75 minutes), and Arnhem (about 30 minutes). The station is a 10-minute walk from the old town centre. Trains run approximately every 30 minutes on the main lines. Deventer is the nearest major rail hub, about 15 minutes away.
By car Zutphen sits near the A1 motorway (Amsterdam–Hengelo), with the exit well-signed for the town. The old centre is largely car-free; parking is available on the edges of the historical district, with several paid car parks within easy walking distance of the Groenmarkt. Do not try to drive into the medieval streets — they are narrow, often one-way, and marked as pedestrian priority.
By bike The Achterhoek is excellent cycling territory and Zutphen is connected to the national LF (Landelijke Fietsroutes) network. The LF3 (Hanzeroute) passes through the town, linking it to Deventer and other Hanseatic cities. Arriving by bike is a genuinely pleasant option in good weather.
