Zutphen is an all-year destination, though spring and early autumn are the most rewarding seasons. The medieval centre looks its best in late April and May when the chestnut trees along the Berkel are in bloom and the Saturday market is at its liveliest. Summer (June–August) brings warm café terraces along the IJsselkade and good cycling weather for exploring the Achterhoek countryside, though Zutphen itself is never crowded by Dutch tourist standards.
Autumn (September–October) is excellent: the light over the IJssel valley is golden, the town is quiet, and the church interiors feel appropriately atmospheric. Winter is cold and grey but not without charm — the medieval streets and the Librije are particularly evocative on a dark afternoon, and the Christmas market on the Groenmarkt draws visitors from across the region.
Zutphen op zijn Mooist (Zutphen at its Best) is an annual heritage weekend, usually in September, when historic buildings and private courtyards normally closed to the public open their doors. The best time of year to explore the town's interiors.
The IJssel sometimes floods in winter and early spring, when the waterfront is partially inundated — a dramatic sight from above, but some riverside paths may be impassable.
