The paddle steamer Skibladner is a living piece of Norwegian transport history — the world's oldest surviving operational paddle steamer, still making its summer runs across Lake Mjøsa as it has done since 1856. The ship operates from late June through early August, calling at several lakeside towns including Lillehammer (southern terminus), Gjøvik, Hamar, and Eidsvoll.
The journey is pleasantly unhurried; most passengers sail one way and return by train. The ship has an on-board restaurant serving traditional Norwegian food, and the open deck is the place to be on a clear day. Tickets can be bought at the Lillehammer quay or in advance online. The Skibladner was comprehensively restored between 2019 and 2022 and is in excellent condition. Its combination of age, operational continuity, and sheer aesthetic pleasure makes it one of the better experiences in the Lillehammer area.
