Kvalvika is a perfect crescent of white sand pressed between two headlands on the outer Atlantic coast of Moskenesøy. There is no road in, no shop, no shelter — only the trail from Fredvang that climbs over a pass and drops to the beach in about an hour. In summer the beach gets a steady flow of day-walkers and wild campers; in winter it is empty, with the surf running hard against the cliffs and the wind unbroken from the open sea.
The harder climb continues from the south end of the beach up to the summit of Ryten (543 m), with one of the great Lofoten views — the curve of the beach below, the open ocean to the west, and the chain of jagged peaks running back inland. Allow a full day for the round trip including the summit.
