Nusfjord

Cluster of traditional yellow and red fishermen's rorbuer in a narrow fjord, chosen in 1975 as a preservation pilot

Nusfjord sits at the head of a narrow, almost enclosed fjord on the southern coast of Flakstadøya, reached by a winding three-kilometre side road off the E10. The yellow and red rorbuer (fishermen's cabins) cluster around the inner basin, with drying racks for cod still in use through the winter season. The village is essentially private — owned by the company that runs the hotel and rorbu rentals — but the harbour, the chapel, and the historic store are all open to visitors.

Day visitors pay a small entrance fee, which covers parking and access. The general store still operates, and there is a small bakery and a restaurant in the old salting house. Best visited outside the peak of summer crowds, when the place can feel busy by Lofoten standards.

A story
Nusfjord is one of the oldest fishing villages in Lofoten and one of the most intact. In 1975, during European Architectural Heritage Year, it was chosen as one of three pilot projects to demonstrate Norwegian traditional building conservation. The whole village — rorbuer, drying racks, jetties, store — was catalogued and restored. Many of the cabins are still in use by winter fishermen and let to tourists in summer.
