Stamsund

Lofoten fishing village on Vestvågøy, where Hurtigruten ships call beside rorbu cabins and theatre stages.

Stamsund is a fishing village on the island of Vestvågøy in Lofoten, with about 1,400 inhabitants. It remains an active fishing port — the harbour, the drying racks, and the rorbu cabins along the waterfront give the place its character.

The Hurtigruten coastal express makes a regular stop at the Stamsund dock, both southbound from Svolvær and northbound from Bodø, making it one of the most scenic arrivals in Norway. Stamsund also has a surprisingly rich cultural life for its size, with two theatre groups and the Nordland Puppet Theatre. The Stamsund Church on the hillside above town offers good views over the harbour and the Lofoten Wall.

Getting There

Stamsund is on the main E10 road that runs the length of the Lofoten Islands. From Svolvær (the largest town in Lofoten, with the main airport), the drive takes about an hour. From Bodø on the Norwegian mainland, a ferry crosses to Moskenes at the southern tip of Lofoten; Stamsund is then about 90 minutes by road to the north.

The Hurtigruten coastal express stops at Stamsund dock both northbound (from Bodø toward Svolvær) and southbound. Arriving by Hurtigruten is by far the most scenic approach. The nearest airport with regular flights is Leknes (about 12 kilometres north), with connections to Bodø and Oslo.

Things to Do

Stamsund is a base for experiencing Lofoten life rather than ticking off sights. The harbour, the rorbu cabins along the waterfront, and the fishing operations give the village its character. The Hurtigruten stop is one of the most scenic in the route. Hiking, cycling, and sea fishing are the main activities — the surrounding mountains descend sharply to the water and the trails are good.
