Kabelvåg

Kabelvåg, 5 km west of Svolvær, is older, smaller, and quieter — the historic centre of Vågan and arguably the more attractive village. A handful of restored wooden buildings line the harbour; the white wooden Vågan Church (1898) towers behind the village; and the Lofoten Regional Museum, the Lofoten Aquarium, and the Espolin Gallery all sit together in the small Storvågan area at the western end of the village.

Worth a visit for at least a half-day. Easy to combine with Henningsvær on the same outing — both lie southwest of Svolvær on the same road.

A story
Kabelvåg's predecessor settlement of Vågar was, from the 9th to the 14th century, the largest market town in northern Norway and the seat of the Lofoten cod trade with Bergen. It was the only chartered town between Trondheim and the Russian border; the medieval king Øystein Magnusson built the first rorbu cabins here around 1120 for visiting fishermen.
