Skrova

A small inhabited island half an hour by passenger ferry from Svolvær, population around 200. The village is a tight cluster of white wooden houses around a sheltered harbour, with a couple of small beaches, a single café, and a famous wooden church. The ferry runs roughly hourly in summer; less in winter.

Skrova is worth a half-day visit for the peaceful contrast with Svolvær. The flat island is good for cycling; rent a bike at the ferry. Norway's last commercial whaling station — the Ellingsen plant — was here, and its product is still sold across Lofoten.

A story
Skrova was the last commercial whaling station in Norway, processing minke whales until 2017. The Ellingsen family-run station gave the island its nickname 'Whaling Capital of Norway' — though the whaling boats now mostly operate out of Andenes, the cured strips of whalemeat from Skrova are still sold in Lofoten supermarkets.
