Lofoten War Memorial Museum

A privately-run museum in central Svolvær with one of the largest collections of original German Wehrmacht uniforms, weapons, documents, and photography from the WWII occupation of Norway. Lofoten was a strategically important fishing region and saw two major British commando raids — Operation Claymore in 1941 and a second raid later the same year — that left the German garrison destroyed and the British very impressed with the local resistance.

The displays are dense, the owner is an enthusiast, and the labelling is original and detailed. Open Monday to Saturday in season. Allow at least 90 minutes; serious WWII history buffs will want longer.

A story
Among the collection is a small landscape painting attributed to Adolf Hitler from his pre-war Vienna days. The museum's owner, William Hakvaag, found it in 2006 in a folder of Wehrmacht art and authenticated it through the visible AH monogram. The painting hangs in a glass case at the back of the museum.
