The Vestfold Viking Museum (Vestfoldmuseene) combines two strands of regional history that at first seem unconnected but are linked by the sea: Viking-age Vestfold and the Norwegian whaling industry. The whaling collection — one of the most significant in the world — covers the era when Vestfold whalers operated in Antarctic waters, and it does so without flinching at the moral dimensions. Ship equipment, harpoons, and the social history of the whaling towns are all here.
The Viking collection includes finds from the great ship burials of the region, most notably material associated with the Oseberg ship — the 9th-century burial vessel discovered in 1904 that is now the centrepiece of the Viking Ship Museum in Oslo. What remains in Vestfold is no less significant: jewellery, textiles, tools, and everyday objects that give texture to lives the Sagas only sketch.
The museum is in the process of building a major new facility; check current opening arrangements before visiting.
