Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Jesus

Monumental neo-Gothic Jesuit church on Kopernika Street, completed in 1921

A monumental Jesuit church on Kopernika Street, east of the Planty, designed by Franciszek Maczynski. Its tall tower is visible across the Grzegorzki district, and its interior blends Secession and early modern styles in a way unusual for the city's older Gothic and Baroque churches. It anchors the Jesuit complex that includes the Ignatianum academy next door.

A story
The brick Jesuit basilica, finished in 1921, is a landmark of early Polish modernism; inside, the painter and architect collaboration produced richly coloured Art Deco mosaics and one of the largest figural pavements in any Krakow church.
