Day Trips

Krakow is one of the best-positioned cities in Central Europe for day trips. Auschwitz-Birkenau is 70 km west — a sobering but essential visit that most people approach via organized tours from the city. The Wieliczka Salt Mine, 15 km southeast, has been mined for 700 years and its underground chambers include a full-size cathedral carved from salt; it's reachable by public bus from the main station. Tyniec Abbey, a cliff-top Benedictine monastery above the Vistula just 12 km southwest, makes an easy half-day trip and can even be reached by kayak in fine weather. For the mountains, Zakopane, the resort town in the Tatra foothills, is about two hours south by bus and offers hiking in summer and skiing in winter.
