Polish food in Krakow is better than you might expect. Look for milk bars (bar mleczny) — subsidized canteens serving cheap, filling Polish staples like bigos, pierogi, and beet soup that haven't changed much since the communist era. Wierzynek on the Market Square is the city's oldest restaurant and worth visiting for the atmosphere even if it's a splurge. Kazimierz has a growing number of good, unpretentious restaurants and Jewish-style cafes.
