Vast 48-hectare urban meadow west of the Old Town, open to the public since the Middle Ages

A vast triangular meadow just west of the Old Town, owned by the city and kept free of buildings since the Middle Ages. It is Krakow's great open-air space, used for festivals, concerts, fairs and Sunday strolls, and forms the gateway to the Kosciuszko Mound and the Salwator district beyond.

These 48 hectares of open meadow, grazed by cattle into the 20th century, have hosted the largest gatherings in the city's history — Pope John Paul II celebrated Mass here before crowds estimated in the millions during his pilgrimages to his homeland.
