Photography museum in Kazimierz documenting Jewish life and heritage in southern Poland

The Galicia Jewish Museum in Kazimierz is a photography-based museum founded by the British photographer Chris Schwarz, who spent fifteen years documenting the remnants of Jewish civilization in the Galicia region — southern Poland and western Ukraine — in all its variety: ruined synagogues and overgrown cemeteries, but also surviving communities, restored buildings, and places where Jewish memory is being actively preserved.

The permanent exhibition "Traces of Memory" presents Schwarz's photographs with extensive explanatory text, tracing the arc from vibrant pre-war Jewish life to destruction and the partial recovery of memory that has been underway since the 1990s. The museum deliberately includes stories of survival and renewal alongside the destruction, resisting the tendency to tell the story of Polish Jewry as purely a narrative of catastrophe. It also hosts temporary exhibitions, lectures, and is an active cultural centre for the Kazimierz neighbourhood. The museum shop has an excellent selection of books on Jewish history and Polish-Jewish relations.
