Izaak Synagogue

Early Baroque synagogue on Kupa Street in Kazimierz, built 1638 and restored after WWII

One of the largest of the historic synagogues of Kazimierz, on Kupa Street. Restored fragments of its painted decoration and its tall arched windows survive, and it has served at various times as a house of prayer and an exhibition space documenting the district's Jewish life. It sits within a short walk of the Old Synagogue and the Remuh.

A story
Built in 1644 by the wealthy merchant Izaak Jakubowicz, this was the grandest of Kazimierz's synagogues; the Nazis stripped its Baroque interior and used it as a workshop, and the surviving wall paintings of Hebrew prayers were uncovered again only after the war.
