Jagiellonian Library

Main research library of the Jagiellonian University, holding over 6 million volumes

One of Poland's largest libraries and part of the national library system, the Jagiellonka serves the university founded in 1364. The reading rooms are for members, but the building hosts regular exhibitions drawing on its extraordinary holdings of medieval manuscripts, early printed books and old maps.

A story
Among its 6.7 million volumes the library guards the autograph manuscript of Copernicus's De revolutionibus, the work that displaced the Earth from the centre of the universe, and part of the Berlinka — a trove of medieval and Renaissance manuscripts evacuated from Berlin during the war whose ownership Germany and Poland still dispute.
