Krakow Ghetto

Podgórze district remnants of the wartime ghetto where 15,000 Jews were confined from 1941

The Podgorze district holds the remnants of the Krakow Ghetto, the holding place for the city's Jews before their deportation to Belzec and Plaszow. Beyond the fragments of the ghetto wall, the area takes in Ghetto Heroes' Square with its memorial of empty chairs and the Eagle Pharmacy, making the streets south of the river a coherent route through the history of the Holocaust in Krakow.

A story
The Nazis sealed some 15,000 Jews into a few streets of Podgorze in 1941, walling it off behind a fence whose tombstone-shaped panels mockingly echoed Jewish gravestones; two surviving fragments of that wall, on Lwowska and Limanowskiego streets, still bear commemorative plaques.
