Museum of Nowa Huta

Museum branch in the planned socialist district documenting life under communist urban planning

A department of the Museum of Krakow devoted to the planned communist-era district. Through documents, design drawings and everyday objects it explains how the ideal workers' city was laid out around Plac Centralny, and how daily life unfolded there. It is the natural starting point for exploring Nowa Huta's Socialist Realist architecture.

A story
The branch tells the story of Nowa Huta, the steel town built from scratch in the 1950s as a model socialist city and intended to dilute the conservative, Catholic character of old Krakow — a plan that backfired when its workers became a stronghold of Solidarity opposition.
