Bernardine Church

The Bernardine Church and Monastery, just south of the castle, is one of the most important Baroque churches in southeastern Poland. Built between 1624 and 1629 for the Order of Friars Minor, it owes its survival of the partitions, both world wars, and the communist period to a quietly persistent monastic community that never quite left.

The interior is dense with seventeenth-century altars and a series of carved alabaster monuments to the Ligęza family. The miraculous statue of the Madonna of Rzeszów, on the main altar, has been a pilgrimage object since the early seventeenth century. The cloister around the courtyard is one of the most peaceful corners of the city; the monks operate a small visitors' room and free guided walks on request.
