Market Square

The Rynek is the centre of Rzeszów, a long rectangular square in the medieval pattern, lined with townhouses painted in faded pastels and dominated by the Habsburg-yellow town hall on its western side. The town hall — neo-Gothic, with corner turrets — was rebuilt in the 1890s on the footprint of an older Renaissance building; the City Council still meets in it.

The square comes alive in late afternoon when the cafés put out their tables and the students from the nearby university spill into it. In summer there is usually a concert or market on, and at Christmas the wooden stalls of the Jarmark Bożonarodzeniowy fill the centre with mulled wine and pierogi. The entrance to the Underground Tourist Route is on the southwest corner.

A story
The statue at the centre of the square is of Tadeusz Kościuszko, the Polish-American military engineer who led the 1794 uprising against the Russian partition of Poland and earlier fought as a brigadier general in the American Revolution. The original monument was destroyed by the Nazis in 1940; the current bronze, by Marian Konieczny, was unveiled in 1980.
