Conserveira de Lisboa

The finest place in Lisbon — possibly in the world — to buy tinned sardines, tuna, mackerel, and other preserved fish. The shop has been at Rua dos Bacalhoeiros 34 since 1930, and the stacked shelves of tins from Portuguese canneries, many with vintage or collector-edition packaging, make it look more like a museum than a shop.

Portuguese tinned fish is genuinely excellent — the sardines are packed in high-quality olive oil and improve with age (vintage tins from specific years are sold as premium products). Conserveira stocks tins from the major producers including Briosa, Pinhais, and Comur. A tin of sardines makes an ideal gift: light, non-perishable, and authentically Portuguese. Open Monday to Saturday.

A story
The Portuguese sardine-canning industry began in the late 19th century along the Atlantic coast, supplying the same protein that fresh sardines provided but with a shelf life measured in years. At its peak, Portugal had hundreds of canneries and exported tins across the world. Most have closed; the tins sold today in specialist shops like Conserveira de Lisboa are produced by the handful of surviving companies, some of which still use vintage designs from the 1930s.
