A 16th-century fortified tower at the edge of the Tagus in Belém, built to defend the harbour and now a UNESCO World Heritage Site along with the Jerónimos Monastery nearby. The Manueline decoration — the distinctive Portuguese late Gothic style incorporating maritime and New World imagery — is among the finest in Lisbon: armillary spheres, crosses of the Order of Christ, and a carved rhinoceros (the first such representation in stone in Europe) adorn the exterior.
