Igreja de Santa Maria

Santa Maria is the parish church of Óbidos and the building that occupies the small main square. The interior is panelled floor-to-ceiling in 17th-century azulejos — blue-and-white tiles in geometric and floral patterns — with a Renaissance painted ceiling above and a side chapel containing works by Josefa de Óbidos, one of the great Portuguese Baroque painters, who lived most of her life in the town.

Free entry. Photography without flash is permitted, and the church is rarely crowded once you're past the doorway.

A story
In 1444 the ten-year-old King Afonso V married his eight-year-old cousin Isabel in this church — a politically motivated child wedding to consolidate the Portuguese royal line. The painted tile-work on the interior walls dates from the following century, a swirl of blue-and-white azulejos that almost overwhelms the small Renaissance interior.
