Rua Direita

Rua Direita is the single cobbled main street that runs the length of the town from the southern gate to the church square. Whitewashed houses with blue-or-yellow painted trim line both sides, splashed with bougainvillea, and the street is lined with shops selling ginjinha (the local sour cherry liqueur), pottery, and craft books.

You will walk it several times during a visit. The shopfronts are pretty but the merchandise is mostly geared to the cruise-passenger market — for actual quality, look at the smaller side lanes that branch off toward the walls.
