Porta da Vila

The Porta da Vila is the main gate into Óbidos, a double dog-leg passage cut through the southern wall and decorated inside with a small chapel lined in 18th-century azulejos. The dog-leg was a defensive feature — attackers could not charge straight through — and the tiles depicting the Passion of Christ inside the gate are a peaceful surprise after the sharp turn.

Almost everyone enters here. Take the steps just inside the gate up onto the walls for the classic photograph of the town stretching out before you.
