Herăstrău Park

Bucharest's largest park with a lake, boats, and open-air dining

Bucharest's largest park, renamed King Michael I Park in 2017 but still called Herăstrău by everyone. It surrounds Lake Herăstrău, the largest of the chain of lakes that ring the northern edge of the city, and it is the lung of the city — three kilometres of shaded paths, an island, an open-air theatre, and a string of terraces where Bucharestians spend whole summer days.

Rent a boat or a pedalo to cross the lake, walk over the bridge to the wooded island, or sit at one of the lakeside restaurants for grilled fish and cold beer. The Japanese Garden at the northern end is a quiet surprise. The Village Museum is on the western shore. Easy to reach by metro (Aviatorilor) or from the centre by tram or taxi.
